If anyone ever asks you what you’d say is the coolest Lexus model of all-time, the definitive answer lies before you. Lexus recently recruited four ice-sculpting experts in London to outfit one of its Lexus NX SUVs with a functional set of wheels and tires that are made of pure ice. The result? A stunningly original crossover that seems totally in line with the season.
We already knew that the all-new Lexus NX compact crossover had helped put Lexus back in the luxury-vehicle sales race for 2015, but now it looks like the brand may even have the upper hand on BMW and Mercedes-Benz. According to IHS Automotive data, Lexus has tallied 106,549 U.S. vehicle registrations through April of this year, besting BMW and Mercedes-Benz by 2,968 and 3,156 units, respectively.
The all-new 2015 NX may be Lexus’ most affordable crossover SUV, but it is clearly in a class above the entry-level offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. While some in the auto industry choose to compare the Lexus NX to the subcompact BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the vehicle’s size and scope of amenities are more aligned with the pricier BMX X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class compact SUVs. In either case, the NX is outselling all of those models handily this year, and it appears to be stealing customers from BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the process.
If car shopping were like courtship, some auto brands would be fun to date, but not quite marriage material, while others might be reliable companions for life, but unlikely to sweep you off your feet. Not Lexus, though. The luxury brand continues to evoke passion in drivers while always being there as a dependable partner for their daily commutes.
With the release of a shadowy teaser photo this week, Lexus has set off a stream of speculation about which type of vehicle it might present to the world when the new LF-SA concept debuts at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month. Some auto journalists have suggested that the Lexus LF-SA concept will be a preview of the next-generation styling of the best-selling Lexus RX SUV, while others have said it might be a replacement for the Lexus CT 200h hybrid hatchback. It may even be an all-new subcompact crossover that will slot below the game-changing Lexus NX!
